The actual “tithe” is an OT command to Israel (ref Leviticus 27:30). It is not a mandatory requirement but optional as the verse below indicates.
The Old Covenant encompassed moral, ceremonial, and civil regulations and was conditional, based on obedience to God's commandments.
Given that believers are indwelt by the Holy Spirit, the cessation of the Old Covenant — marked by the sacrificial death of Our Lord — denotes a shift from the law written on tablets of stone to the law written on hearts. This formally marked an end to mandatory tithing.
- However, we are still called to financially participate in the work of the church (ref Philippians 4:10-19)
- Help the needy (ref 2 Corinthians 8)
- Care for those who spiritually care for usπ
The Bible advocates salting away money habitually, to give “in keeping with income” (ref 1 Corinthians 16:2). Although the tithe is not a requisite the NT accentuates the importance and benefits of giving wilfully.
Thus, the important thing to remember is that we are not limited by a tenth of our income. It might be more or it might be less, as the situation warrants.
Churches that require tithing to keep salvation are in my opinion unbiblical, greedy, manipulative and legalistic. However, God expects each of us both to support the work of ministry, as well as give to those in need.
