The most High God shares everything with Jesus. Even His name. The Almighty in his foreknowledge said —
I) Jesus as Angel of the Lord — The Bible is rife with instances where the angel of the Lord speaks as God, identifies Himself with God, and exercises the responsibilities of God.
- THE OLD TESTAMENT: He appears to Moses in a flaming bush (ref Exodus 3:2). However, later on He identifies himself as “God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob” (ref Exodus 3:6).
- THE NEW TESTAMENT: Our Lord states in no uncertain terms that He was One and the same with the Father (ref John 10:30)
So “The Angel of the Lord” is unique. However, “The Angel of the Lord“ ceases to appear after the incarnation of Our Lord. BTW the NT records Our Lord declaring Himself to be existent “before Abraham” (ref John 8:58).
II) Jesus as co creator
The concept of a co-creator is not new to Christianity. It was there in OT itself. There is a continuity of thought between the Old and New Testaments.
- OLD TESTAMENT: In Genesis 1:1-3 Ref vs3, “... and God said …”. Thus the idea of the Word as an embodied entity, since both the OT and the NT say that God is a spirit. In another instance, the Word of the Lord appears and speaks to Jeremiah,. Despite this fact Jeremiah refers to Him as God (Jeremiah 1:4-6).
As per the scripture, it is certain that He had an integral role in creation.
III) Jesus as God
The concept of the divinity of the preincarnate Jesus is evident in the OT itself which predates Christianity. That is the reason why I have chosen to quote from the Orthodox Jewish Bible too.
Thus while the preincarnate Christ was on earth, it was God the Father who was in heaven.
Inspite of the fact that the Bible never records Jesus saying the precise words, “I am God.”, He did say “I and the Father are one.” (ref John 10:30). Our Lord was saying that He and the Father were of one nature and essence thus corroborating the word of God the Father when He said, “...for my name is in him” (ref Exodus 23:21) NOT “I gave Him my name”. In the high priestly prayer of the Lord, He says —
.God said to Moses that He would be sending an angel with them to accompany them from Egypt, yet the book most quoted by Our Lord states it was God Himself who was with them. However, inspired by the Holy Spirit the NT says that Jesus did it all 👇
The author of Hebrews in chapter 1 vs 8 points out that the Son of God is called “God” in the OT (ref Psalm 45:6 and Hebrews 1:8). So, the Father Himself refers to Jesus as “God.”
