Thanksgiving typically is appreciation expressed to God for particular blessings received. More to the point Biblical  thanksgiving is a force that shifts the atmosphere, silences the enemy and positions us to receive every provision of God.

This is precisely why the enemy has dedicated the full prowess of his dark powers to conceal its true essence from the believer.

I) Nowadays, Thanksgiving has been turned into a response mechanism. Biblical Thanksgiving is thanking God for what He has already promised Not for what is seen in the tangible world. The modernized version, thus effectively ensures that we are living Not by faith but by sight.

This in short means, our circumstances dictate our worship. Our Lord at the tomb of Lazarus prayed thus

Notice the tense. In short, He thanked God the Father for something that hadn't manifested itself in the physical realm but was already settled in the spiritual realm.

However, this is by no means an easy task. We are conditioned to give thanks for favours that we can see. Consider how hard it is for a person suffering from a terminal illness and the resultant despondency, to give thanks for good health.

II) Consolidates our position as covenant heirs-

However, religion teaches otherwise. We are subtly taught to revere God in a way that replaces awe with disparateness. In the process, God becomes majestic but inaccessible and reserved. The scripture however, nowhere does it teach that the proper posture of a redeemed beleiver is fear. Instead it says

Religion encourages not the entitlement of sonship but the timidity of a stranger seeking charity. “…to walk boldly unto the throne of grace” is neither presumption nor is it arrogance.

III) Weapon of spiritual warfare -

Moreover, many today have completely forgotten, what Thanksgiving accomplishes in the spiritual realm. Satan is a toothless lion. He operates through deception and lies. Contrary to the reality of his defeat at the hands of Our Lord, he wants us to keep on believing that the battle is undecided.

However, Thanksgiving declares otherwise and that we are already joining the victory parade. Thus, this dismantles every scheme of the enemy.

In reality, when we give thanks, we are aligning ourselves with heaven and declaring that —

  • the answer exists in Our Lord and we Trust Him to manifest the solution to us in the physical realm. The operative word here is “Trust” ~
  • At an opportune time ~

The believer is in effect, moving from petition to proclamation — which is the activity of a herald. If proclamation be seasoned with obedience and humility, then we cut off Satan's ability to use our words against us. Thus we get the ability to Impose silence on the Devil.

Thanksgiving is trusting God and his Word, acknowledging His sovereignty and claiming what He is eager to give us - the love and provision due to us, as sons and daughters. Thanksgiving is the very mechanism by which Faith operates simply because it is not emotional but volitional.

Not thanking Him for His many mercies would lead to a gradual hardening of the heart. A hardened heart promotes unbeleif.

Consequently, man tends to beleive in his own ability but the Lord Himself has  pronounced a curse on all such not only in the OT but also in the NT.

Old Testament:

“Thus saith the LORD; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the LORD.” [Jeremiah 17:5; KJV]

New Testament:

“But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.” [Revelation 21:8; KJV]
