Why was man created? Even if we have free will, what’s the point?

Adam & Eve were created with one supreme purpose - to know God, to love God and to have fellowship with God. The reason, an omnipotent God, wants time with us is that He loves us. The Hebrew verb, halak in Genesis 3:8, refers to repetitive and habitual movement in general. This insinuates that God was a habitual visitor. Fellowship is the natural result of a loving relationship and God does love us:

  • “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” [John 3:16; KJV]

GOD cares

According to Job 7:17-18, God is concerned about us and watches us every day. The inference being that He cares about us.

Old Testament

“The Lord is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him.” [Lamentations 3:25; KJV]

New Testament

“So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.” [Hebrews 13:6; KJV]

God essentially wants an intimate and close relationship with each one of us as is clear

"That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ." [1 John 1:3; KJV]

II. The second part of the question

However, it is impossible for fallen man to have any relationship with a Holy God. It is essentially this, that the Lord God poses in the Book of Amos.

However, here too He comes to the rescue and promises to forgive us our sins if we humbly pray to Him and do not follow the ways of this world.

Infact, the Mosaic law was provided to convict man of sin and make him realise that he needed Almighty God to save him.

This is where the free will of the man comes into play. He is free to choose between what the omnipotent Lord says or what the enemy says, once he fully knows and appreciates the consequences of his action.

At this point, the man made righteous with the righteousness of the Lord, will — as the Bible puts it- “be dead to sin". He will in essence want what the Lord wills.

However, if he chooses to rebel against the Almighty, the scripture says that he will not be forgiven again.

He, in essence, exercised his free will to choose the “bad", after fully knowing the good and the bad. This in essence is rebellion against the Divine Father who in his boundless love, saved us from sin. God has a very very poor view of rebellion.

Remember, the Lord Jesus in the New Testament says:

“He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathereth not with me scattereth.” [Luke 11:23; KJV]

Mind-boggling it might seem but the created can be the friend of the creator, as the Bible seems to indicate.

A friendship can be defined as a reciprocal relationship between two people who share a bond of mutual affection.

So yes, man can rise above sin and the confines of this world, to be God fearing and God loving.
