The idea of “waiting on the Lord” is Not passive as the English language implies. The Hebrew has the connotation of a watchman on the wall, who waits for the end of his “watch”. He is certain that the morning will dawn and along with it, the end of his duty but he nevertheless continues to do the duty assigned to him faithfully in the meantime.
Thus, there is a difference in the mindset itself and thus, in the way the relevant passages in the Bible are interpreted.
This is what is expressed in the verse below π
I) Relation to Biblical Hope: As opposed to passive waiting,which is translated as patience in common parlance there is an element of expectant hope accompanying it From a Biblical standpoint, hope is a certainty or guarantee, that God is true to His promises and so is an expectation with certainty that He will fulfill His promises (ref Psalm 119:14).
Grounding our hope in Scripture while we wait for God’s timing can be considered as one of the quintessentials of the Christian faith.
II) Relation to Faith: Faith is an essential component because it involves trusting in God's timing and His plans, even when answers are not immediately visible. Every delay exposes self-reliance and pushes us to lean harder on Him. As it involves the confident expectation of a positive result, it strengthens our faith.
III) Relation to Remembrance: This plays a crucial role, as it serves to keep alive the memory of an event. In this, it emphasizes the goodness of God and His abiding affection for His creation. It strengthens our faith in divine providence and thus can strengthen our resolve to wait patiently.
IV) Role in Testimony: Waiting on the Lord also promotes serenity, engenders stability and it is also a testimony to others to put their trust in God when they see our faith.
V) Relation to Endurance: Our Lord stressed the importance of persistent prayer and faith while waiting, in the Parable of the persistent widow (ref Luke 18:1-8). It requires that believers be committed to living out their faith even when immediate answers or resolutions are not apparent. It is a testament to the believer's faith in God's sovereignty and goodness, even amidst life's trials and uncertainties.
VI) Redirects Our Gaze to His Character: This concept, which is a central theme in Christian theology, emphasizes the call for believers to embody the attributes of God (ref Philippians 2:5). Reflecting God's character has practical implications for Christian living as there is a commitment to living out the teachings of Our Lord, ethical behavior and integrity involved.
When one has to navigate the ups and downs of life, fear is replaced with faith and our focus tends to shift from our temporary problems to the power and provision of an omnipotent creator.
For this cause, waiting on the Lord brings God’s blessings.
The true worship of the Almighty is rooted in the will of the individual and is not influenced by their emotions. Perceptions and convictions apart, every individual should put their complete faith and trust in the living God, despite what their notions dictate. He is always working for our good, even when we don’t feel Him (ref Romans 8:28). Moreover, the scripture says that iF He has begun something He will see that it is fulfilled (ref Philippians 1:6)..
Rather than inactivity, waiting on the Lord entails remaining faithful, nurturing hope, and preparing our hearts for what is to come. In fact, hope and patience are intertwined, as believers await the fulfillment of God's promises.
The Book of Revelation is commonly presumed to have been written more than 6 decades after the crucifixion of Jesus, and in there He is still referred to as the “Lion of the tribe of Judah”.
The untimely death of her husband and his brother left Tamar not just grieving but also socially ostracized, particularly as childbirth was linked to a woman’s identity and honor, in ancient semitic cultures. Thus Tamar embodies resilience; her faith holds the promise of future redemption. Waiting is not easy—especially when it comes with the weight of our deepest pains. Tamar’s actions lead to a lineage that would eventually be blessed in ways she could not have envisioned, for the Messiah came from there.
